“We were shooting down in the gully behind Maori Leap.” This is up the Taieri River at the first main bend from the mouth of the river.

John Broadbanks and I were enjoying a glorious month in the wilds. On the evening of which I am thinking we were shooting down in the gully behind Maori Leap.1 The entire party had been out on the boat all day; and, after tea, the ladies had reminded us that the cupboard was as bare as old Mother Hubbard’s. John and I picked up our guns and set off for the spot at which rabbits were most likely to be found.
