In his famous painting of the King Alfred episode [pictured above], Sir David Wilkie depicts the ruined scones as being quite black on the one side and quite white on the other. With characteristic artlessness, the illustrious academician dramatically presents to us, under this homely imagery, one of life's crucial problems.
