Few things are of more use to a man than his footwear. Footwear occupies an insignificant place in literature. Even Carlyle ignored the theme. His ‘Sartor Resartus’ deals exhaustively with cassocks and surplices, robes and regalia, coats and cloaks, hats and helmets, together with all the niceties of masculine and feminine adornment; but of boots and shoes he has nothing to say.
