This is Saturday. Saturday is Australia’s great day. The nation was born on a Saturday, for it was on a sultry Saturday morning in January, 1788, that Captain Phillip dropped anchor in Sydney Cove. In point of fact, Saturday is the name, not so much of a day, as of a specific phase of human experience. We all catch ourselves at odd moments living over again some of the unforgettable Saturdays of long ago.
