Do I propose to write a novel? I have been asked the question hundreds of times, and have, on each occasion, given the strictly noncommittal reply. For you never know! In a world that is essentially a packet of astonishments, one is always surprising himself. Sitting here, surrounded by the familiar phenomena of the twentieth century, I am conscious of no burning desire to add to the treasures of fiction; but, in the twenty-first century, anything may happen. To produce a sensational novel may then be the height of my ambition. In view of this remote possibility, I have taken one or two preliminary steps. These also, of course, are strictly noncommittal. By insuring my goods and chattels against fire, I do not commit myself to a terrific conflagration; and, by the same token, I do not bind myself to write a novel by taking the precaution to have the framework in readiness in case the passion should seize me.
