David longed for water from the well of Bethlehem. It is one of those vivid and dramatic scenes, full of power and pathos, in which the Old Testament is so wonderfully rich. I have wished that one of our foremost artists could be persuaded to devote to its portrayal, all the high powers of which it is well worthy. The picture which would result would preach a most forceful and eloquent sermon to all who gazed upon it. And if I mention a few of the places where I would specially like to see, the painting hung, I shall, perhaps, suggest some of the more prominent practical lessons which this old world idyll holds in trust for the men and women of this generation.
